Cowden is a charming un-spoilt village through which the Romans would probably have passed on their way to London from the coast. The remains of the Roman road are still visible at Holtye.
The church, St Mary Magdalene, was built around 1300 and has a shingle tower which is slightly crooked. A ring of bells was restored for the millennium.
The village boasts two friendly historic public houses, The Fountain and The Queen’s Arms, both of which serve food.
Cowden makes a good starting point for many interesting walks within Kent or into neighbouring Surrey and East Sussex. The village can be accessed by road, rail or bus. |
